At this point, Irwin will probably project as a back/fly hybrid swimmer, especially if he keeps improving underwater. 1:56.01. Best Times: Li is the fastest 100 breaststroker in the class, but hes not in any way just a pure speedster: going sub-1:58 in the 200 breast is a really nice swim as a sophomore. He took a gap year and will enroll with the class of 2022. An even bigger drop, though, came in the 200 fly: from 1:50 to 1:42.9. You could argue that hes the best all-around IMer in the class over Lucas, sitting about a second faster in the 200 and a second slower in the 400. This class has the misfortune of following a couple of really star-studded classes into the NCAA. Knowing that a good number of these top recruits never pan out, it would be fun to also have a faces in the crowd type of category. Like Buff, Kharun is one of the top 100 flyers weve ever ranked as a junior, beating out names like Luca Urlando (45.6), Aiden Hayes (46.0) and Camden Murphy (46.2). But being this good from the 50 through the 200 will give Scholl a shot to swim every relay in the lineup while also contributing individually, and thats really valuable in the NCAA format. That type of multi-stroke range makes you think Modglin should develop into an incredible college IMer, as we tend to see recruits make their biggest drops in the IM races. Probably more influential for his NCAA scoring ceiling is a cut from 50.0 to 47.5 in the 100 fly for a great third event. (Previous Rank: N/A) Malickis 200 is still in development, but he was 2:03.2 at this point last year, so hes well on his way to becoming a two-distance college breaststroker. But the race is also an absolute masterclass in attacking your flip turns. He doesnt have much in the way of versatility yet, though. (From 20.4 to 19.8 in the 50 free and 44.6 to 43.6 in the 100 free). Best Times: Hitchcock is the classs best 200 IMer, and hes knocking on the door of the class lead in three other events. Custer doesnt quite come down to the 500 the way eventual NCAA champ Magahey did (Magahey was 4:14 as a junior), but Custer is still the best 500 freestyle in this class by a sizable margin, and hes only about two seconds out of NCAA invite level there. Most of his best times came in the month of March, including an 8:58 in the 1000 free thats nearly the best in the entire class. Unlike the last few swimmers in our ranks, DAriano really needs one of his events to pop to move up by next year. He dropped more than six seconds in the 200 back and is on the cusp of NCAA invite level (it took 1:41.8 in 2021). As we cant reliably quantify whose current portfolio of times is most suppressed by the pandemic years, all we can do is rank based on the in-pool production weve seen. Hes dropped about a second and a half in the 100 free and looks like he could develop into a multi-relay threat at the college level. These rankings in no way mean that all of these 20 swimmers will be NCAA standouts, and they certainly dont mean that no swimmer left off this list will make big contributions at the NCAA level. Norris has long arms, an efficient catch, and a really susprisingly-good flutter kick for a race this long. Hes got better 50 free speed than most of them, and pretty comparable 100 free speed. With freestyle being so strong, this class winds up a little thin on stroke specialists. He sticks right in with a field of outstanding breaststrokers there, and generates a lot of pulling power. His five 200s definitely stand out from the rest of his event portfolio, most notably the 200 IM and 200 free. Plus, heading into the Olympic year last spring, many of the top swimmers may have spent a little more time focusing on long course without showing the same kind of short course drops. A top tier college coach once told me that he doesnt spend much time looking at swimmers from Northern Californiaonly thinks a couple of clubs in that region really do a decent job. Plenty of these swimmers missed potential taper meets amid the coronavirus pandemic, and its difficult to determine whose times have stagnated and which swimmers merely havent had enough chances to rest up and race in the past year. Heres a 200 free (lane 4, fifth lane from the top) where Sergile really shows off some nice flip turns and carries his speed really well through breakouts. Branon doesnt have nearly the versatility of Sergile, but is pretty decent in the relay-distance freestyles (20.9/45.3/1:39.4) and is rising fast in butterfly. Wed also keep an eye out for a big 200 breast drop from Li in the next year: just last month, he went 1:02.8 and 2:16.2 in the long course versions of the 100 and 200 breast, and those times definitely feel faster than where his short course times are at the moment. Hes a great long course swimmer, too, with 2:03.9/4:19.9 times in the 200/400-meter IMs and a sub-2:00 200-meter fly. On the flip side, he doesnt have a ton of speed yet, which could drag down his relay value a bit. One thing to watch with Jones will be how he develops as an IMer. Hes bringing it around in a hurry, though, cutting from 1:45 last year to 1:38.1 this year. Hes completely lived up to that mission, dropping 2.4 seconds in his 200 free while also seeing big drops in his shorter races. Hes another outstanding long course swimmer in fact, his long course times (54.3/2:00.9) are even more impressive than Sergiles times pointed out above. 9.. But its worth noting up-front that this class has a real chance for some big upheaval as swimmers catch up from the missed pandemic years. That might suggest more distance drops are coming. As top recruits continue to give verbal commitments earlier and earlier, were moving up our rankings to help give better context to big recruiting announcements. It was a slow start for BC's offense, who did not get . Right now, it can cause some awkward long or short walls, but that can be cleaned up with time and experience. 2. We focus only on American-based athletes, simply because there is so much uncertainty with international recruits if theyll come to the United States, when theyll come to the States and with what graduating class they should be ranked.
